KINGMAN - Schools in downtown Kingman were placed in a precautionary lock down Monday afternoon when a jail inmate escaped from a Detention Officer outside the Mohave County Courthouse.

Court Security Director Bob Lawless said one officer was escorting a group of four inmates from a van into the courthouse for hearings when Kasey Allen Long, 41, bolted from the scene.

Sheriff Doug Schuster said Long had faked an injury and was not placed in leg shackle restraints so he was able to flee on foot at about 1:31 p.m. Other officers joined in the chase and search for Long who was located hiding in culvert along a wash at Chestnut Street.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said Long obeyed verbal commands to surrender and he was taken into custody at 2:02 p.m.  Long was to appear in court for armed robbery counts and he will now face an escape count as well.

Sheriff Schuster said his department will take steps to make certain the injury ruse does not occur again.

“This is a procedural error and it will be addressed to ensure it does not happen in the future,” Schuster said. “The area was saturated with officers almost immediately which allowed for a tight perimeter.”

No injuries were reported.
