Twice as many impaired operators, contacts as usual over Memorial Day weekend

MOHAVE COUNTY – There was no shortage of impaired operators on Mohave County waters over the Memorial Day weekend.

Mohave County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said nine people were arrested for operating under the influence, more than double the number in recent years, and despite an intense public outreach program.

Mortensen said deputies also made twice as many contacts with operators this year than in the past, “a direct sign of the increase in boating traffic on Lake Havasu and the Colorado River,” said Mortensen.

By the numbers:

26 – boater assists, 1 disturbance, 4 agency assists, two medical, three boat crashes (one involved a suspected impaired operator).

236 – compliance safety checks

7 – life vest violations

19 – transom: bow riding, reckless operation criminal citations

260 – boating violation warnings

13 – other violations
