Drivers keep trying to cross flooded out washes

MOHAVE COUNTY –The danger of driving during monsoon storm-triggered flooding was on full display during recent rains.

Mohave County Search and Rescue (SAR) personnel were dispatched July 12 to the Willow Ranch area east of Kingman after a 73-year-old man tried to drive through a running wash on Lookout Canyon Road.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said the man lost control of his full-size pickup due to the force of the running water. “Rescuers were able to bring the driver to safety where he was assisted by neighbors while the water receded,” Mortensen said.

SAR also assisted during another July 12 incident in Golden Valley. Mortensen said seven people from several vehicles became stranded between two running washes.

“As rescuers arrived on scene, water levels began to recede," Mortensen said. “Rescuers then crossed over the wash and escorted those who were stranded to safety."

Mortensen advised drivers to be smart during storm activity and refrain from attempting to cross bodies of water.
