Proliferation of cargo containers renews debate over aesthetics

 

KINGMAN – Kingman’s storage container controversy blew up two years ago when compliance and enforcement issues surfaced in the commercial sector.

 

They’re drawing city staff and Planning and Zoning Commission attention once again because their use has proliferated throughout the community.

Citizens and members were equally split when the commission, during its Tuesday meeting, discussed whether Conex boxes should be permitted in residential areas.

Former commissioner and Kingman resident Allen Mossberg believes the containers are eyesores.

“We are not the Port of Long Beach and I don’t want to see the city of Kingman looking like that,” Mossberg said.

Kingman resident Wes Maroney told the commission he prefers the durable containers to sheds and other makeshift storage structures that also clutter neighborhoods.

“It’s a lot better looking than plastic covers that people put up in their backyards that have no permits and look really junky,” Maroney said.

Commission member Scott McCoy agreed that sheds are more troublesome than the heavy duty containers.

“They’re certainly a better option than those plastic things and these plywood things that you see scattered all over the yard after a good, solid windstorm,” McCoy said. He drew rebuttal from Commissioner Terry Shores.

“They have a place and they have a place on a ship going across the ocean and not sitting in somebody’s yard or a side yard,” Shores said.

The chairman and two other commissioners indicated they are “torn” over whether and how to allow or regulate cargo containers in residential areas. There was no consensus and the commission expects additional discussion at its July 10 meeting.
