Ban school sites, not gun rights
No easy solution to mass shootings of children – unless we take away the venue
Being such a lover of all things human, and a prideful person at that, it's very difficult for me to admit something. The truth is I recognized Feb. 14 that I have become completely desensitized by the violence of school shootings. Much like war casualties scrolling on the ticker below the "news" from places I didn't even know existed, school massacres have unfortunately been a common staple of my media diet as I've grown up.
Like many children at school, I experienced bullying. I was beaten up quite frequently, had my bike stolen multiple times, and I was generally unwelcome in activities the other kids were doing.

BLM’s Herder takes command of 2.8 million-acre Arizona Strip District
ARIZONA STRIP – The Bureau of Land Management has named Michael Herder as the new district manager for the Arizona Strip District.
Herder comes to Arizona from Nevada, where he served as the associate district manager and later, district manager, for the BLM’s Ely District. Herder served in a temporary assignment as the BLM Nevada associate state director from September through December of 2017. He started work at the Arizona Strip Jan. 8.

Meeting on Lees Ferry fishery planned for March 5
Game & Fish will stock trout in popular fishing spot below Glen Canyon Dam
GLEN CANYON DAM – The Arizona Game & Fish Department plans to stock rainbow trout this spring into the lower three mile walk-in section of Lees Ferry, a blue-ribbon trout fishery below Glen Canyon Dam in northern Arizona.

AGENDA: Water issues top council’s work session; fees dominate regular meeting
KINGMAN – The Kingman City Council will discuss two water-related subjects when members meet for a work session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The first is an update on the U.S. Geologic Survey groundwater modeling ands the second is the possible creation of a Water Recharge and Sustainability Commission. The Hualapai Basin is currently in an overdraft situation, meaning more water is being taken out of the aquifer each year than what is recharged.

Dispute over district budget splits chief, two directors
Collins, Bailey allege NACFD will be down nearly $500,000 by end of fiscal year; Eder says his figures ‘show we’re on budget’
KINGMAN – Fire Chief Wayne Eder and Director Mike Collins have different assessments of the Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District budget.
During the Thursday, Feb. 15 board meeting Collins said it appears the district is tracking toward overspending by June 30, the end of the fiscal year.

KINGMAN – Mohave County Attorney Matt Smith said economic and practical considerations explain why his office this week ended its pursuit of capital punishment in two murder cases.
Staff attorneys will instead seek convictions and life prison sentences for Justin Rector, 29, Bullhead City, and Darrell Ketchner, 59, Kingman.

State won’t seek death penalty against man who police say murdered 8-year-old girl
Rector allegedly strangled Bella Grogan-Canella, buried her in shallow grave.
This is the second death penalty case the Mohave County Attorney has abandoned this week.
KINGMAN – The Mohave County Attorney's office is no longer seeking the death penalty for an alleged child killer from Bullhead City.
